Like much of the world, I have been watching the courageous people in China as they protest the repressive policies which have so severely impacted their economy and their country. I watch the amazing women in Iran who are putting their lives on the line for a better, more equal future for women and daughters. And, of course, not a day goes by that we don't hear more grim stories from the Russo-Ukrainian war. My thoughts are with these people as they take significant risks to be heard, to bring attention to their concerns, to stand up and be seen.
At times, it can be challenging to figure out how to best respond to the events of the world. One way we can show our own solidarity with these movements is by witnessing them, by shining our own light into the darkness. Poetry has the ability to be this light. The words we write and share impact minds, and change hearts. Whether it is being a voice for Chinese citizens holding blank pieces of paper in the air , or standing with Ukrainian citizens who stand in the way of enemy tanks , our words can help give voice to those whose voices need to be heard.
